GamesPlanet – which started life as a site about games – continues to centre on the subject of games. Each month in our Review of the Month series we take a closer look at one release that people are talking about. And we have a variety of practical guides on subjects such as PEGI age ratings and the way in which parents can control their children’s use of games. There’s also a look at choosing a gaming headset and the retro consoles that are worth collecting.
We don’t play games all day, every day. Most of us are running businesses, maintaining homes, driving to work, worrying about data, planning the odd weekend away. As a result the site also deals with business, technology, digital marketing, home and garden, lifestyle, health, travel, motoring and the law. All of it is written in plain English by people who know those subjects well.
We have been publishing since 2016, and our archive now runs to hundreds of articles. We attempt to answer real questions clearly, reference a trustworthy source where appropriate to provide backing for a claim, and then provide a short summary at the end of the publication to highlight the main points covered in more detail.
Meet the writers
Jack Mercer: Games
Jack Mercer is a Birmingham-based games writer and freelance video editor who has been playing games for as long as he can remember. His interests range from major console releases and gaming hardware to independent games, retro consoles and the history of gaming. Jack particularly enjoys discovering games that deserve a little more attention and revisiting classics to see whether they still hold up. When he isn’t writing or editing video, there is a reasonable chance he is adding another game to a collection he already admits he doesn’t have enough time to finish.
Hannah Reeves: Technology
Hannah Reeves is a Manchester-based technology consultant who enjoys making complicated technology easier to understand. Her interests cover everything from artificial intelligence and cybersecurity to smart-home technology, consumer gadgets and productivity tools. Hannah is particularly interested in the practical side of technology: what a new development actually does, who it is useful for and whether it genuinely makes life easier. Away from technology, she enjoys photography, city breaks and attempting to keep her collection of gadgets under control.
Tom Whitfield: Business and finance
Tom Whitfield is a Leeds-based business owner and adviser with a longstanding interest in entrepreneurship and the realities of running a company. His interests range from small-business management and leadership to productivity, finance and the stories behind interesting companies. Tom enjoys looking beyond corporate headlines to explore the decisions that businesses make and the people who make them. He believes there is usually something useful to learn from both a spectacular success and an expensive mistake.
Rebecca Lawson: Legal
Rebecca Lawson is a Cambridge-based writer with a longstanding interest in legal affairs and the ways in which the law affects everyday life. She particularly enjoys exploring consumer rights, employment issues, contracts, regulation and unusual legal cases. Rebecca’s aim is to make complicated legal subjects easier to understand without reducing them to meaningless soundbites. She is especially interested in the difference between what people assume the law says and what the legislation or case law actually provides.
Daniel Foster: Digital marketing
Daniel Foster is a Nottingham-based digital marketing consultant with a background in websites, search and online marketing. He started building websites as a teenager and gradually became fascinated by the reasons some websites attract attention while others disappear from view. Daniel writes about SEO, content, paid advertising, analytics, social media and artificial intelligence, particularly where these areas overlap. He enjoys testing new tools and ideas and has a healthy suspicion of anyone claiming to have discovered the one secret formula for succeeding online.
Claire Morgan: Home and garden
Claire Morgan is a Cheltenham-based interior stylist, gardener and enthusiastic home improver. Having renovated several properties, she has developed a healthy respect for the difference between a five-minute DIY job and one that takes an entire weekend. Claire enjoys decorating, restoring furniture, experimenting with gardens and finding practical ways to improve a home without spending a fortune. She is particularly fond of giving old furniture a second life and firmly believes that most homes have more potential than their owners realise.
Lucy Harding: Lifestyle, health and travel
Lucy Harding is a Bath-based freelance writer and photographer who enjoys finding interesting stories in ordinary places. Her interests range from food and travel to books, culture, fashion, wellbeing and days out. Lucy has a habit of keeping lists of restaurants to try, places to visit and things worth photographing, so blogging provides a useful excuse to work through them. She particularly enjoys discovering independent businesses, interesting local events and experiences that are easy to overlook.
James Harrison: Motoring
James Harrison is a Sheffield-based automotive engineer and lifelong motoring enthusiast. His interests cover modern cars, classic vehicles, automotive technology, motorsport and the engineering stories behind the machines themselves. James enjoys understanding how things work just as much as he enjoys driving them, and has spent plenty of weekends maintaining, repairing and occasionally regretting modifications to his own cars. He writes for anyone who appreciates that motoring is about considerably more than simply getting from A to B.
