A very brief History of Monmouth

Monmouth is a town situated in the picturesque border between Gloucestershire in England and the Wales side of Monmouthshire that it sits. It is a hilly area with access to the picturesque Wye Valley and the Forest of Dean. The town itself is very beautiful due to the work of a Monmouth Architect like https://www.hillsandcompany.co.uk/ and they are certainly someone you should contact if you are thinking of building in the area.

The town sits on the river Monnow which joins the wider and larger Wye. It was first established as a Roman fort called Blestium. This was in support of the large Roman town of Caerwent and the substantial garrison at Caerleon, which even boasted a small amphitheatre.

The strategic importance of the site was recognised by the Normans who built a castle on the site to establish their power over the English and to show the Welsh that they were not to be trifled with.  This was probably because the place had been the site of a vicious battle between the English and Welsh resulting in the defeat of the English, at least for a while.

In the mediaeval times the peace that the castle brough saw the town become a market town for the many sheep farmers surrounding the area. It is also a centre for education and has the only known example of a stone gated bridge which dates back to the middle ages.
