HTML5 banner ad testing before launch

HTML5 ads can fail silently by failing to render an animation, a fallback image not loading, or a click not registering. By testing the basic functionality of your HTML5 banners before launch you can save yourself a lot of potential problems.

Check the Animation Renders Cleanly

Play the animation through from the start of the ad all the way through to the end checking for any issues such as frames being missing or skipped, elements flickering or other problems. Also check that any text is rendered properly and doesn’t clip within the container.

Test the Static Fallback Image

Static Fallback Image Is Correctly Displayed and is the Correct File Size (e.g. a PNG or JPG) – This will load instead of the HTML5 in instances where HTML5 is blocked. The image should be of the correct file size, load correctly and be the correct dimensions to fit within the banner space and clearly display the core message of the banner.

Verify File Weight

Also make sure that the zipped creative does not exceed the network’s published limit for HTML5 bundles (often around 150-200 KB for initial load).

Confirm the Click URL and Tracking Pixel

Open up the ad in a browser and test out the click URL for the ad as well as fire off any impression or click-tracking pixel that you may have incorporated into the ad. Utilise the browser’s network tab to verify that the tracking pixel fired off correctly.

Test Polite-Load Behaviour

Polite-load (ie, ad waits for page to load completely before it starts to initialize).

A few minutes of testing before you go and pull a live campaign down to sort out a very obvious error is worth it.
