One of the main layout trends in recent years was a minimalistic theme, with little text near to buttons to distract the user. This trend has grown less and less popular over the last year, and now it has been replaced with an overlapping content layout.

Websites are now rearranging the text and images on the screen so that they can provide lots of information in bite-sized chunks that are easy for the viewer to digest. The text chunks are also smaller (if not more plentiful) so that the user isn’t overwhelmed by lots of information.


According to Pantone, the colour of the year is “Greenery”, which is a light and natural shade of green. This shade was chosen by the Pantone team as it symbolizes new beginnings, and it is likely to be one of the most popular colour choices for web designers this year. Natural colours are also popular, such as slate, stone and earth.

Gradient colour schemes go in and out of fashion every year, and it seems that they are back with a bang for 2017. For instance, Instagram currently uses a gradient logo, and many professional websites now feature a neutral gradient background.


Last year’s navigation trend was the hamburger menu – a small menu with three lines. However, this year sees the return of mega navigation, which is a small menu button that can be clicked on to reveal a whole host of menu options.
