Developing a Site that is Contaminated

If you want to develop a site, something that can really cause a problem is if the land that you want to build out is contaminated. However, despite the fact that the land is contaminated, this doesn’t mean that it cannot be developed, it is certainly possible to still be able to build on the land.

There are lots of things that can cause land to be classed as contaminated and therefore unsuitable for building on. These include certain chemicals, heavy metals and substances that are dangerous such as asbestos. The types of land that are more likely to be contaminated with these dangerous chemicals and substances tend to be places that have previously been used for industrial reasons. Former mine areas, factories and petrol stations are all areas that are highly likely to be contaminated.

The reasons why land that is classed as contaminated may be dangerous for people to live on are varied depending on the contaminants. It may make the soil unsafe for growing food, it could be that it puts the area at higher risk of explosions or fires, or it may be that it will emit dangerous gases which then are breathed in.

Before you are able to build on the land, you need to ensure that you decontaminate it and make it safe for people to use. A contaminated land remediation company like this soilfix.co.uk will have to come in and do this, as they have the right knowledge and equipment to take measurements and assess the land before cleaning it up and making it safe and suitable for development.
